Back to school! Yup; I'm taking "Medical Terminology 1" in an effort to make myself more employable.
.
You'd think that with working for 4 different companies that I was "employable" enough! But my main job with my #1 boss could become obsolete: my boss told me 8 yr ago that he planned on retiring early. And this summer, he mentioned it again and said that he "worried about me and my future". Ahhhh! What a super terrific boss, huh! So, he suggested that I take this course; the hospital is just a hop, skip and a jump down the road from my house, and it pays well and has a benefit package(things that I don't currently have).
.
Mucho deniro later, I am walking into a classroom of 11 others and laying down an additional $85 for this TOME:
.
This book is chock-a-block full of interesting and exciting chapters such as these:.
Our first chapter deals with the prefixes, roots and suffixes of words -- their origin and meanings -- from which we will eventually be able to easily identify their generic meaning!
.
Like this one:
hemi/gloss/ectomy
.hemi (think N & S hemispheres being 2 halves of the earth) = half
gloss (think lip gloss & tongue licking lip gloss) = tongue
ectomy = removal
.
Therefore, hemiglossectomy = Removal of half of the tongue
.(Note: This procedure in it's generic form was mentioned many times to me by my mother when I was young!)
.
It's not an easy course: there'll be daily homework and weekly tests and monthly exams. But it will be so interesting. Soon, my increased vocabulary shall be able to dazzle lesser morals around me, correct (and irritate) greater beings, and just generally being a much larger pain in the behind! (Plus it'll give me better oomph when doing my Saturday NY Times crossword puzzle!)
.
Well worth the money for all that, right?
.
As well, if all else fails, at least I shall die knowing that at least one thing on my Bucket List can be crossed off ..........................
.
.
This lonely 'widda woman' shall once again be in close proximity with this:
even if it's only in book form!!! Sigh!
.
.
Now! Where'd I put that Barbie pencil case?

I hope the class pays off and finds you a very good job. One of my nieces went to school for that and didn't have much luck finding a job at all using her newly learned skills. She currently works as a clerk in a department store.
Sandy aka Doris,
It never hurts to learn!! I am a RN and having worked in a hospital and a Doctor's office I was always trying to find someone to do dictation...they need to know the lauguage! So you go girl! There are many advantages in the medical field but it might take some looking.
Good luck...and as I tell my kids "Swell Your Brain"!

Oh boy! I took one look at that textbook and let out a loud groan! I really hope the class pays off and you get yourself a more secure job with benefits. Good luck!!
Hilarious!
I love medical terminology......but then I use it every day.
So I'm gonna give you a test....you gotta look it up and report back.
Give me the full medical term for EGD. Hint: it has to do with the esphoagus.
THEN you need to be able to tell me what this test is going to do.
How's that for a mean teacher?
Good luck with the course! I think it's great to continue your learning.
Girl ya have already dazzled me. Good for you and baby with us all gettin' older and fallin' apart, health-care is where the action is.
I'm just thrilled your goin' to do this. You rock!
God bless your new horizons!!!!
my daughter-in-law was laid off nearly a year ago, and is taking courses in medical terminology and medical transcription. Tough stuff. Good luck.
All education is a gift ... I'm so happy that your current employer had the forsight to encourage you. No matter what happens in Life Education is something that will stay with you.
Looking forward to reading about your adventures in class!! Wishing you warm hugs (its getting quite chilly in southwestern Ontario) ..HHL
You.crack.me.up!! And probably your boss too! That's why he hasn't retired.
You are making me laugh. I am sure you will learn something and hopefully it will help. I took that many years ago when I worked for a Home Health Care Provider however then I went into mortgage, mmmmm I was laid off in 2/07, maybe I should have stayed in the medical field.
Have a great day,
Kim
Good for you! I hope all goes well, but watch that male repro system.
I do hope you enjoy the class!I school my son at home so I am constantly learning and re-learning things. New to us this year is German! So far I find it easier to learn than Spanish or French :)

Best of luck on your class! I know you're going to do great!

Kudos to you for going back to school! Me, I can't do medical. Shiver. Next semester I get to take a class I'm actually looking forward to. And that makes a huge difference in my interest level, participation level, etc.
Sounds like you're excited about this class-you'll do well. But, ain't it ridiculous the prices of the books? I had a math book that was $200!!!! Hopefully, you can write it off on your taxes.
