Groundhog Day Musings

February 2nd - Groundhog Day.  I never pay much attention to Punxsutawney Phil, Wiarton Willie or our very own Shubenacadie Sam.  I figure that we will get as much winter as we will get.

But it's a fun exercise and a good excuse to wish you an especially good day.

What I do like about February arriving is that it means January is over and done with.  I like the fact that February is the shortest month and that the middle of the month brings Valentine's Day .... and that, of course, is another great excuse to hang red hearts all over the house and eat something chocolate.  (Did you also know it's Condom Day?  Not much call for those in my house!)

The 21st is  Pancake Day as it's known in our house.  That brings back such sweet memories of my childhood and looking for the "prize" in your pancake.  Would it be a toothpick? (I'd marry a carpenter.)  Button? (I'd marry a tailor.)  Money?  (I'd marry a rich man.)

And while I was reading through your posts this morning, bj at Sweet Nothings got me thinking of molasses cookies; and that brings back sweet memories of my childhood and being at my Nanny's house next door.  Nanny always made the best molasses cookies:  big, flat discs that were full of gorgeous tangy, spicy ginger/cinnamon/cloves flavor ... and even better when you sandwiched two of them together with butter!  I think I'd better make those very soon!

Before the 22nd comes (Ash Wednesday) and Lent begins and I do something foolish again this year like giving up cookies or chocolate or ice cream!

Mmmmm, I haven't thought about those molasses cookies Granny made for years. I remember how they deliciously smelled up the house.

I just may have to go dig up that ancient recipe.

Happy February sweetie, I usually call the grandkiddos and tell 'em what special day it it but I think I'll keep Condom Day mum! Heeehehehe!

Hope your feelin' better my friend.

May God bless your day!!! :o)

It is great that January is done and now only 6 more weeks of winter. I'm counting those days till Spring for sure.

I'm with you on the Groundhog Day event. It's always winter weather until April at least! Those molasses cookies look like my mil's recipe which I have thought about making soon. And they are good with butter on them and a slice of cheddar on the side! Lent - I guess I should give up some chocolate stuff and maybe ice cream. That'll get me started on my summer figure. :) Have a good one! Pamela

Your molasses cookies sound like my gingersnaps. I love making those wonderful cookies. It was my daughter's favorite growing up. For some reason I always felt they were not as bad for you as say chocolate chip....whatever makes one feel better, right? We saw our shadow in the southern part of the U.S. Have a great day.

Around here, (Alberta) it means maybe not another long mean nasty cold spell. I hadn't thought of all the good days February has.

So what if you find a prune in your pancakes? Never mind, I am imagining all kinds of answers for that one.

We made it to February without too much of a real winter here in Ohio. Although I do love snow I am relieved to be this far through winter without the usual doldrums. Yum, molasses cookies! I am going to have to do all my indulging before Ash Wednesday too.

My grandmother made molasses cookies for me, my brother, and my sister regularly. She knew they were our favorites. They were soft, round, gingery circles with white icing. Thinking of them is to think of my grandmother. Unfortunately I don't have the recipe!
