My First Autumn Apple

On my drive to work, I pass Mainline Market.  Some of you more "mature" readers may know the kind of local shop I mean:  the kind that smells like a food market -- a mixture of whatever produce is in season at the moment and whatever meat or poultry is being cut and packaged in the back room.  It takes me back to the early 60's when I'd run to the shop for my mum after she'd phoned in an order, $5 clutched in my hand and the promise of a nickel to spend.

Although Mainline rebuilt a couple of years ago from the original smaller building, it still smells like their old-fashioned shop, a homey type of smell, not like the sterile, perfect supermarkets that we usually shop at.  They have great weekly bargains and a few little oddities like peewee eggs.  (They're so cute; ya hardly want to eat them.)

Today I went in for the local newspaper and milk for my tea.  As I walked through the door, my olfactory senses were hit by the scent of fresh apples.  It's a little early in Nova Scotia for most apples, but they had some Ida Reds and a variety I'd never heard of before called Sunshines.

"They're good" said the produce manager.  "Do you want to try one?"  whereupon he picked one up, shined it up real nice on his clean shirt and handed it to me.  Delicious!  A tiny little apple with a soft skin and a juicy 'n' delicate sweetness. (I bought half a dozen of each.)

And for the first time this year, I smiled as I thought about Autumn and what it brings:  cooler weather, longer walks, colorful leaves, jackets and sneakers; Canadian Thanksgiving, my birthday, Halloween, and crisps 'n' cobblers 'n' soups 'n' hot biscuits 'n' cocoa with marshmallows and ....... APPLES!

  • What's your favorite kind of apple?
  • And what's your favorite thing about Autumn?

My favorite thing about autumn is most of the things you listed (minus a birthday) plus warm sunny days. My favorite apple is the Cortland. I picked some Macs at the local U-Pick last Saturday but they still need to ripen. The Cortland were also not ripe enough for my tastebuds. I've never heard of the Sunshine variety. The little grocery you mentioned sounds wonderful.

We used to grow apples on our five acres and a favorite apple was Black Twig.
I like to see rain in autumn which we always need, here in California.

We need more friendly stores like this one. I love the way autumn smells and feels. I love green granny smith apples with caramel!

My favorite is probably honey crisp. The pink ladies are usually good as well. I want it crisp and juicy! I too remember those markets.

I'll have to be on the look out for those Sunshines. They do sound good. I love Jonathan's and Honey Crisp but haven't had any yet this year. I'm sure they are out there already. Hope you have a fantastic Friday!

I love everything about autumn, but especially that it kicks off prime hiking season in my mountains. I discovered a new (to me) variety of apple at my favorite orchard just last year. Candy Crisp...as a matter of fact, I'm headed over to western North Carolina this weekend just to pick some. An early fall ritual!

Gravensteins for pies and Macs for eating!
Fav autumn things - colors of the leaves, especially red maples, the crunch of leaves as you walk thru them, and back to school which for me means an empty nest (again) Yeah!

Hi! We don't grow apples in the Philippines, we import them. But apples are found in all supermarkets everywhere you go here! I love the scent of apples, apples red and green fill our tables at Christmas and so...when I get a whiff of them, even if bountiful here, it's Christmas.

I do remember markets like that! I love Golden Delicious apples. A little mushy for some people, but they are so sweet!

My favorite apple is the Gala. Usually eat a couple a day.
I love walking through crunchy leaves, apples, and crickets singing 24/7.
And the smell.

Oooh - Gravensteins! I haven't had one in years but we used to get them in Nova Scotia. Then Cortland and McIntosh - so tart and crisp. I love the fall - the changing colors, crisp air and lovely smells.
